This is the second planting event for trees on Rodi Rd in Penn Hills. With the help of a grant from TreeVitalize Pittsburgh and the support of the Municipality of Penn Hills, the PHSTC and its volunteers will be planting trees within the PennDOT ROW of Rodi Rd and in the WPC Rodi Rd garden in Penn Hills.

The planting event will be from 9 am to noon on Saturday, October 28th.

RAD Day Event: Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, Oct. 4th, 6-8PM. Help WPC put the Penn Hills community flower garden on Rodi Road to rest for the season. Autumn is the perfect time to collect annual flower seeds to save for planting the following spring. Help pull annual flowers, reset garden beds, and harvest flower seeds to take home!

Hey friends! The time to plant the new garden on Rodi Rd is almost here! The new Western PA Conservancy (WPC) roadside garden at the entrance to Penn Hills (between the Rodi Plaza and the Comfort Inn sign) will be planted on Saturday June 3 @ 9 am. Please join us and invite your friends and family too! WPC will provide shovels, gloves and water. There is no rain date. Parking information will be provided later.

A designer at WPC designed the garden with pollinator-friendly native shrubs, perennials and a long row of annuals in the front to provide summer-long color. WPC will provide all of the plants, will help us open and close the garden every year and will provide any troubleshooting. Local Roots Landscaping donated labor and equipment and have already built the garden beds. Four Penn Hills residents have offered to maintain the garden throughout the summer!

This beautiful garden at the entrance to Penn Hills, along with the 13 street trees we planted last fall and the 20 street trees we plan to plant this fall, will make a big improvement to our Rodi Rd business district. Let’s all pitch in! We hope to see you there!

The PHSTC will hold a Tree Pruning Workshop on Saturday, 3/4/23, at the Penn Hills Community Park (rain date = Saturday, 4/18/23).

​Please join us for this pruning workshop. Learn how to prune trees and shrubs from a certified arborist. Please wear work clothes, gloves, sturdy shoes, and bring pruning shears, small pruning saw, and/or loppers, if you have them.

This was our 7th Front Yard Tree Project and 10 new trees were planted for free on Sycamore Drive!

May 2022: Penn Hills Arbor Day celebration was held at Turner-Friendship Park . Hardworking folks jumped on it and planted 15 trees!

October 2021, Idlewood Road: PHSTC and amazing volunteers planted and fenced 10 FREE trees for the local residents, including: serviceberry; red bud; and sweetbay magnolia. ​Thank you to all for a successful 6th FYTP!

May 2021: The Shade Tree Commission hosted Penn Hill's 3rd annual ARBOR DAY CELEBRATION at Turner Friendship Park. With the generous help and support of Penn Hills Midget Football, Local Roots Landscaping, and Penn Hills Parks and Recreation, 18 trees were planted in the park. The celebration included: the reading of an official Arbor Day proclamation; the give-away of two redbud trees; and a tree identification walk around the park.

May 2021, Alcoma Dr., Tunnelview Dr. and Camera Pl. - Alcoma neighborhood: PHSTC's fifth FRONT YARD TREE PROJECT was held on a gorgeous spring day with the generous funding support of the Penn Hills Free Masons. PHSTC volunteers (including the Masons) planted and fenced FREE trees for 14 local residents and planted 3 trees at the 3 Lakes Golf Course.

October 2020, Maple Ave. and Shirley St. - Rosedale neighborhood: PHSTC's fourth FRONT YARD TREE PROJECT was successfully completed with the generous funding support of Jendoco Construction and Real Estate Co.. Over 25 wonderful PHSTC volunteers planted and fenced FREE trees for 14 local residents. ​Thank you to all! And special thanks to our neighborhood advocates Bill Moutz and Cindy Connelly, and the generous support of the Deakins family.

October 2019, MacFarlane Drive: This FRONT YARD TREE PROJECT was successfully held with the generous funding support provided by Sandy Hollow Arts and Recreation for the Environment (S.H.A.R.E.). PHSTC and happy volunteers planted and fenced FREE trees for the local residents, including: dogwoods, red buds, and sweetbay magnolia.

September 2018, Springdale Drive: The second FRONT YARD TREE PROJECT was within the 400 block of Springdale Drive, where the PHSTC and volunteers planted and fenced 10 trees, including: dogwoods, red buds, sweetbay magnolia, and black tupelo - again, for free! With minimal care, these trees will beautify and add value to the neighborhood in years to come.

May 2018, Veronica Drive: The PHSTC conducted it's first FRONT YARD TREE PROJECT on Veronica Drive. The Commission and its hard working volunteers planted, mulched, and fenced 36 trees in the front yards of residents along the street. - FOR FREE! All they need is water!

Penn Hills held it's first annual ARBOR DAY CELEBRATION at Penn Hills Community Park. The celebration, hosted by the PHSTC, was well attended and included; the reading of an official Arbor Day proclamation; the planting of three new black gum trees by Penn Hills residents; a baby goat petting area; the give-away of 50 redbud tree seedlings; and a tree identification walk around the park.
